A 50 minute IHC Accessible Concert presented by Chamber Music New Zealand. Pieces performed by the Aroha Ensemble, songs led by community musician Julian Raphael and lots of audience participation. Julian will introduce each piece of music and help you join in if you want to. It will be really relaxed - there are no restrictions for you if you come to this performance, you do not have to worry about disturbing the show. Tango Ballet Suite, a musical street drama in six scenes for string quartet by Argentinian tango master Astor Piazzolla, is at the centre of this colourful and varied concert presented by the Aroha Quartet. It is framed by Haydn’s vivacious String Quartet in G Op. 33/5 and Mendelssohn’s tragic and turbulent final quartet No 6 in F minor Op. 80. The programme is rounded out by ‘Whakatipua’, a beautiful work by well-known NZ composer Anthony Ritchie that evokes the mountain landscape of Central Otago. In this programme we play two mainstream works including one of Haydn’s typically elegant and witty quartets. The last and greatest of Mendelssohn’s six quartets, written in response to the sudden death of his beloved sister Fanny, is probably the most impassioned piece of music he ever wrote. In contrast, Piazzolla’s 1956 Tango Ballet Suite evokes the poignant essence of the Argentinian tango in a narrative of six scenes. Ravel's String Quartet shows the diverse influences of Mozart, Debussy, Faure and Javanese gamelan. This tuneful and dramatic work is coupled with masterworks by Beethoven and Shostakovich, and some wonderful traditional Chinese pieces arranged for string quartet.
