ASQ members are joined by guest tutors and guest players from the 10 years of ASQ International Music Academies and the 20 years of the ASQ itself to perform at the regular St Andrew’s lunchtime concert series. Entry by gold coin koha.

Our programme begins with the elegant Classicism of Boccherini. In the next work, ‘The Bullet’ by French composer George Onslow, the composer dramatically depicts a hunting accident in which he was almost killed and his subsequent recovery. In the second half, the atmospheric ‘Swim the Sliding Continents’ by Auckland composer Louise Webster and the heartfelt ‘Postlude’ by Ukranian composer Valentyn Silvestrov are followed by Dvorak’s richly Romantic String Quintet No 2 in G. On Sunday 3 December at 3 pm we will be joined by our friend and colleague NZSO bassist Sasha Gunchenko for a house concert in Kelburn. We present two richly varied pieces for string quintet. French Romantic composer George Onslow’s String Quintet No 15 in C minor Op 29 is called ‘The Bullet’. In this exciting autobiographical piece Onslow depicts a hunting accident and his subsequent illness and recovery. Our second piece is a classic of the chamber music repertoire: Dvorak’s quirky and richly varied String Quintet No 2 in G Op 77. Refreshments are included in the ticket price of $35. Our Flight programme takes wing with one of Haydn's most popular works, his 'Lark' Quartet in D Op 64 No 5. The second piece is String Quartet No 4 by Polish composer Grazyna Bacewicz. This passionate music won her first prize at an international competition for string quartets in 1951. We mark the 50th anniversary of the death of one of the Twentieth Century's key musical figures, Igor Stravinsky, with his miniature Concertino for String Quartet, written in his neo-classical style. We finish with Tchaikovsky's String Quartet No 1 in D Op 11, a work full of soaring melodies and heartfelt emotion, famous for its Andante cantabile slow movement. A 50 minute IHC Accessible Concert presented by Chamber Music New Zealand. Pieces performed by the Aroha Ensemble, songs led by community musician Julian Raphael and lots of audience participation. Julian will introduce each piece of music and help you join in if you want to. It is framed by Haydn’s vivacious String Quartet in G Op. 33/5 and Mendelssohn’s tragic and turbulent final quartet No 6 in F minor Op. 80. The programme is rounded out by ‘Whakatipua’, a beautiful work by well-known NZ composer Anthony Ritchie that evokes the mountain landscape of Central Otago. In this programme we play two mainstream works including one of Haydn’s typically elegant and witty quartets. The last and greatest of Mendelssohn’s six quartets, written in response to the sudden death of his beloved sister Fanny, is probably the most impassioned piece of music he ever wrote. In contrast, Piazzolla’s 1956 Tango Ballet Suite evokes the poignant essence of the Argentinian tango in a narrative of six scenes. Ravel's String Quartet shows the diverse influences of Mozart, Debussy, Faure and Javanese gamelan. This tuneful and dramatic work is coupled with masterworks by Beethoven and Shostakovich, and some wonderful traditional Chinese pieces arranged for string quartet.

The sunny first quartet of Mozart is coupled with Schubert's last quartet, a work where light battles dark. The lively and energetic Dance of the Sidhe by NZ composer Sam Piper and the colourful 'Eight Chinese Folk Songs' by Zhou Long provide a wonderful contrast.
