3 March 2018 - Applications are now open for our 2018 ASQ International Music Academy, which will take place from 23-28 July at St Andrew's on The Terrace in Wellington. Participants can enrol for either the full six-day course, or a shorter version running Thursday to Saturday.

The ASQ Academy is ideal for student and adult non-professional string players and pianists of a minimum standard of Grade VI. A maximum of three pianists will be accepted, for the full course only. Participants receive chamber music and string orchestra coaching, take part in masterclasses, sectionals, informal concerts, social events, and the final concert on the Saturday evening. There will also be public lunchtime concerts for particpants and tutors.

In 2018 we have a wonderful team of guest tutors: pianist Emma Sayers (formerly lecturer at Massey University Conservatorium of Music and the New Zealand School of Music), violinist Donald Armstrong (NZSO Associate Concertmaster), cellist Ken Ichinose (NZSO Associate Principal Cello), double bassist Joan Perarnau Garriga (NZSO Principal Double Bass) and chamber music coach Brian Shillito (former NZSO Sub-Principal Viola).

Our programme begins with the elegant Classicism of Boccherini. In the next work, ‘The Bullet’ by French composer George Onslow, the composer dramatically depicts a hunting accident in which he was almost killed and his subsequent recovery. In the second half, the atmospheric ‘Swim the Sliding Continents’ by Auckland composer Louise Webster and the heartfelt ‘Postlude’ by Ukranian composer Valentyn Silvestrov are followed by Dvorak’s richly Romantic String Quintet No 2 in G. Tickets ($30 General Admission, $25 Concessions, $10 Under 18s, $60 Families - 2 Adults + 2 Under 18s) available from Eventfinda (service fees apply) or at the door from 7 pm.
