ASQ with Sasha Gunchenko (double bass) for Aroha Music Society

This concert is a rare opportunity to hear performances of five colourful and diverse pieces for string quintet. First the elegant Classicism of Boccherini’s String Quintet in D, followed by the String Quintet No 15 “The Bullet” by George Onslow, in which the composer depicts a hunting accident in which he was nearly killed. The movements of this piece from 1829 dramatically depict the shooting and the composer’s recovery. The second half of the concert begins with two short works: the atmospheric Swim the Sliding Continents by Auckland-based composer Louise Webster and Postlude, a heartfelt elegy by Ukrainian composer Valentyn Silvestrov. The final piece is the richly Romantic String Quintet No 2 in G Op 77 by Dvorák. Tickets $40 ($30 Aroha Music Society members) from Trybooking.

Tango Ballet for Waikanae Music Society

In this programme we play two mainstream works including one of Haydn’s typically elegant and witty quartets. The last and greatest of Mendelssohn’s six quartets, written in response to the sudden death of his beloved sister Fanny, is probably the most impassioned piece of music he ever wrote. In contrast, Piazzolla’s 1956 Tango Ballet Suite evokes the poignant essence of the Argentinian tango in a narrative of six scenes. New Zealander Anthony Ritchie’s 1995 work Whakatipua evokes the mountain landscape around Queenstown. Tickets: Members $23-00, Non-members $33-00, Students (under 25) $5-00.
